Scottsdale Sleep Center holds keys to a better night's rest

Scottsdale, AZ March 26, 2004 -- More than 70 million Americans suffer from disorders of sleep and wakefulness, according to the National Institute of Health. Those sufferers in the valley now have a fully accredited Sleep Center right here in Scottsdale to help them diagnose the problem and get real solutions. The Center has been open for just short of two years, and recently received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

Led by Dr. Robert Hooper, a board certified sleep specialist and sleep, pulmonary and critical care physician, The Scottsdale Sleep Center is a physician owned diagnostic and resource facility for individuals with sleep disorders. The medical staff at the Center includes physicians with over 60 cumulative years of sleep medicine experience.

"The AASM congratulates The Scottsdale Sleep Center on fulfilling the high standards required for receiving accreditation as a sleep disorder center," said Conrad Iber, M.D., president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. To receive a five-year accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional quality healthcare as designated by the Academy. The AASM accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center's facility and staff, including evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training.

"We were particularly excited to receive this accreditation," commented Operations Manager, Stephanie Moncrief, "as there is a lot of competition and only a few centers receive it. It means that we have achieved what we set out to do when we opened, and that is to be the premier center which patients and doctors choose when they are suffering from lack of sleep and need to receive a diagnosis," she added.

Scottsdale Sleep Center is located in a quiet medical complex at the corner of 91st Street and Mountain View Road, near Scottsdale Healthcare Shea, in Scottsdale, Arizona. The facility has four bedrooms, queen size adjustable beds and full private baths. The rooms are restfully decorated and offer a relaxed testing environment. Televisions and VCR/DVD players are in every room. Individuals can be evaluated for possible sleep disorders and appropriate testing is performed. The Center performs overnight sleep testing (polysomnograms) and related procedures on patients with suspected sleep disorders. The overnight procedures include polysomnograms and nasal CPAP polysomnogram titrations.

Additional procedures include multiple sleep latency testing (MSLT), maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT) and overnight oximetry. The staff is able to perform mask refittings for current CPAP users. They are also able to perform CPAP and Bi-level machine pressure verifications.
