DREAM COACHING: Achieve The Life You Were Meant To Lead By Understanding Your Dreams By David C. Lohff
February 14, 2004--"You must learn how to become your own dream coach, a skill that will serve you for the rest of your life," writes David Lohff, whose latest book, Dream Coaching: Achieve The Life You Were Meant To Lead By Understanding Your Dreams (Running Press; January 2000; $18.95 hardcover), will help you discover what's missing in your present life and preventing you from living life to the fullest.
"A good dream," Lohff writes, "honestly represents where you are in relation to the person you are intended to be—even to the point of showing you the obstacles that you create for yourself. A good dream also shows you the truth about you regardless of how your parents, spouse, children, neighbors, and boss view or treat you."
Dream Coaching shows you how to interpret your own dreams. Dream encyclopedias are good starting-points but inadequate. To help you acquire that skill, some of the topics Lohff discusses are:
•Wish-fulfillment dreams—those playful dreams that conspire to fulfill our deep (and sometimes darkest) desires—and how to skillfully handle them.
•The varieties of dream experience—themes of shame and guilt, prophesy, entrapment, self-identity, illumination, relationships, work and home, violence, grief and mortality—receive a special chapter devoted to the exploration of each of them
•How dreams can function as a warning, a preparation for an upcoming challenge, a signal for breaking free and becoming independent, a revelation of your innermost fears
•Strategies to improve your ability to recall your dreams. Determining how long you sleep, waking as close as possible during REM cycle, jotting down the images and events within the dream all help to carry dream experiences into your waking life.
•How to keep a journal of your dreams
•How physical and emotional traumas affect your dreams. Why certain key events trigger powerful dreams.
•The biochemistry of dreams. How nicotine, alcohol, drugs and diet affect your ability to receive and profit from dreams.
Dream Coaching dispels the stereotype of the dream interpreter as an arcane eccentric excavating the regressive corners of the human psyche. To the contrary, according to Lohff. The goal of dream interpretation is to help you solve everyday problems.
The place of dreams in your life is in the seat of self-observation. Rightly understood as a resource for personal insight, dreams help you begin to see yourself from perspectives not readily available in waking life. You can see how to leverage the strengths in your soul, how to protect yourself and others from your weaknesses, and how to build into your life the safety mechanisms necessary to protect yourself and others from the broken places in your self.
A dream can reveal the truth about you that is absolutely vital for self-development. Unless you can see yourself clearly, you cannot see what is required to maximize your potential in life. Dreams are inner resources empowering you to function more effectively in the waking moment of your life.
If you want to get the most of life, read Dream Coaching and your dreams may just come true. Dream on!
